Are you looking to get a job as a certified nursing assistant (CNA)? If so, you are going to need a certain type of personality and skill set in order to pass the competency exam. CNAs should be prepared with a strong personality and the ability to handle people well.
CNA work tends to be an intimate job where nurses can grow with their patients, creating a lasting bond that brings joy to the lives of everyone involved, despite otherwise poor circumstances. Typical responsibilities include assisting patients with the essential activities of daily life such as dressing, bathing, eating, or exercise.
You might be asked to perform a number of tasks such as treating wounds, assisting with medical procedures, cleaning linens, and feeding patients while recording their daily food and drink intake. You are also required to help document the health of the patient and report the information to other nurses or doctors.
When patients call for help, you will need to be there to respond. You’ll also be required to perform standard nursing duties such as checking vital signs, taking a patient’s temperature, blood pressure, and turning patients in their bed as needed.
This job often occurs in a hospital setting but it can also be found in a dedicated nursing facility or residential care building. In either situation, you will be required to interact with your patients daily. Being an assistant can bring a great amount of life experience and can help you build your résumé in the field of medicine. This job is also known as an attendant, orderly, home health aide, or nurses’ aid.
The job is pretty demanding but physically and mentally. You’re going to need “thick skin” for patients that may become unruly, but at the same time maintain a level of compassion. You should have strong listening skills and communication skills. When recording data, you need attention to detail and problem-solving skills with the ability to think on your feet. If you become frustrated by either stressful events or difficult problems, this job may not be for you at this time.
What kind of salary can you expect working as a CNA? It depends. Incomes range from $25,000 to $36,000 or more. You will also need to pass a competency exam that can last anywhere from four to twelve weeks.
If you are thinking about getting a job as a nurse, then you should also consider nursing school. Many students coming out of college will enter nursing school to continue their education and develop their skill set.
If you have been known to have a loving, compassionate, and friendly nature throughout your life, then this could be the perfect line of work for you. Both men and women apply to be nurses, and currently in the United States nurses are predominantly female. If you attend school, make sure to study hard and work on your interpersonal skills. Do not show frustration with people and smile as much as you can! Working with people is not easy and in some cases is a natural ability.
