Ideally, when you get a job you most often would like it to be full-time. This way you ensure that you maintain consistent work and bring in the highest level of pay each month. Working at least 40 hours per week is standard for many people, and it is the way they ensure their livelihood.

Many Americans with families work full time jobs in order to put food on the table and take care of their children. This is different from part-time or seasonal work because you are generally going to be working every month and week year round.

In order to land a good job, you often have to have the right amount of experience. Part-time jobs are often given to people with less experience due to the fact that they may not be needed for a full day or week. Experience workers that can handle 40 hours are often seasoned and can expect to receive higher pay and better benefits. This is why these jobs are more desirable and can be more difficult to find, especially during a recession or when work in general is hard to find.

Always prepare for an interview by dressing properly and updating your résumé so that it reflects all of your work skills. If you are able to, contact former co-workers and obtain some testimonials that showcase your personality or trustworthiness. Submit your résumé to multiple companies and follow up with them if you do not hear back, but do not become impatient if you do not get an answer right away. Each business might be reviewing multiple candidates in a review process that could take several days or weeks. If this is the case, politely follow up via email about one week later to check in on the status of your application. If you do not get the job, simply move on to the next opportunity.

Working 5 days a week is standard for most people and will often come with paid vacation time. Standard federal holidays are granted and you usually have a bank of sick days to draw from each year. When working 40 hours, you often do not get paid for overtime unless this arrangement was specifically discussed up front. Always determine what your overtime pay might be if you end up working more than 40 hours in a given week. In some cases you can often ask for holiday or weekend pay as well to supplement your income. Working on a Sunday sometimes gives the person 1.5 times or even double their normal pay rate. Some people have no problem working extra days so they accept the time whenever possible. Other people prefer to always have their weekends off to take care of errands, go to the gym, or to spend time with family.

If you do not wish to work a full-time job, you can always apply for part-time work if that’s preferable. Many people work multiple jobs in order to produce solid income.
