The Roles And Responsibilities of Phlebotomy Jobs

Phlebotomists, or phlebotomy technicians, are professionals that draw blood from patients. They also take the blood samples to be passed on to a laboratory for further checks on health issues such as bacteria, diseases, cholesterol and more. The wonderful thing about selecting a career as a phlebotomist is that you have the ability to work in a number of different types of medical facilities, from private laboratories to hospitals.

Phlebotomist Job Description

This is a field that can be both fun and rewarding, as you will meet a range of new people on a daily basis. When you are a phlebotomist, you will be responsible for taking blood from patients, then delivering it for testing. You need to expect that you will be taking blood samples from babies, kids, young adults and the elderly alike. Depending on where it is that you work, you may see one particular age group over another. For example, if you are working in a children’s hospital, you will be taking blood samples from newborns and young children. Job Duties Of A Phlebotomist

Not only will you be drawing blood from patients, but you may have to collect other specimen samples while making sure that you properly label every vial that is filled. You will also have to bring the samples to the laboratory in the hospital you are working at, or to an independent lab in your local area. These are just a few of the duties that will be expected from many phlebotomist positions:

  • Collection of blood samples from patients
  • Proper patient identification skills, especially while working within a hospital
  • Accuracy while labeling vials with the names of patients and the dates of collection
  • Deciphering the best method for blood draws depending on each individual patient
  • Transporting of all of your specimen samples to the laboratory
  • Centrifuge blood samples, if allowed within the state you are working in
  • Working with a large number of patients that range in both age and health status
  • Personality that is friendly, sympathetic and courteous while working with patients
  • Impeccable organizational skills
  • Proper infection control standards while working with equipment and patients

Necessary Phlebotomist Skills

The phlebotomy skills that are required will usually vary from one state to another. In general, you should be expecting to take a phlebotomy course that will span over several months, resulting in a clinical period where you work as a phlebotomist student.
